Investigative Services


Investigators are available 24 hours a day to assist citizens and other agencies in investigations. Investigations are made on felony complaints, missing persons, bad checks, stolen property, and other filed complaints. The department enjoys a close working relationship with neighboring cities, state, and federal agencies in bringing about a rapid resolution to most problems.
                                                             

Identity Theft


Identity theft occurs when someone steals personal information and uses it to purchase items or establish credit in your name. This can often leave you with many unknown debts resulting in a poor credit report. Personal Identity Information includes your name, address, social security number, driver’s license number, and date of birth. Such information can be obtained by stealing checks, credit cards, account numbers, and employment histories.
                                                
Identity theft is growing at an alarming rate and has become one of the most prevalent crimes in Michigan as well as the United States. Identity theft in Michigan is greater than the national average and people must be aware of ways to prevent from becoming a victim.  If you become a victim of identity theft, you must be aware of the steps to take to help clear your name.
                                                    

Prevention


There are several steps people can take to help prevent becoming victims of identity theft:
  • Never give out any personal information or account numbers unless you know the person or organization or you initiated the contact.
  • Before discarding, shred all items that contain personal information.
  • Hold your mail when away from home for extended periods.
  • Cancel unneeded credit cards.
  • Review financial and credit card statements each month for unauthorized activity.
                                                 

If a Victim


If you are a victim of identity theft, do the following:
  • Immediately contact the three credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and Transunion) and ask that a “Fraud Alert” be placed on your credit report.
  • File a report with the local police.
  • Contact the Social Security Administration Fraud Hotline at 800-269-0271.
  • Notify the Federal Trade Commission at 877-438-4338.
  • Review your bank and credit card statements.
