HOMECOMING PARADE: The annual High School Homecoming Parade starts at 4:30 pm today. Come on our and enjoy the sights and sounds of the high school marching band as well as other floats and entries. The parade starts at Hall/Lake Drive, moves northwest along Lake Drive to Lakeside Drive and then to Wealthy Street in Gaslight Village. These roads will be closed as the parade approaches and passes through, so this will affect the afternoon commute.

FALL LEAF PICK UP BEGINS. Beginning Monday, October 7th, City crews will pick up of loose leaf piles along the edge of the roadway. Residents may rake leaves onto the edge of the street for pickup. The regular weekly collection route will be maintained as long as possible, but as the volume of leaves increases, your pick up day may be delayed. More information.

THINGS TO DO:  
"The Affordable Care Act and You," a FREE informational seminar for those age 65 and younger who are responsible for purchasing health benefits for their family. Topics include why you should get health insurance, how you can get covered and when and how to enroll for coverage in the Healthcare Marketplace opening for enrollment beginning October 1. The seminar is on Saturday, October 5 at 10:30 AM at the East Grand Rapids branch. No pre-registration is necessary. Presented by Priority Health and the Kent District Library.

Wikipedia Editors Meet Up. Saturday, October 19, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ the EGR Library. Do you edit a page on Wikipedia? Want to meet up with other editors and share tips, tricks and techniques? Join Bettina Cousineau, Wikipedia editor and educator, and other editors to help create the encyclopedia for everyone. Please bring your own laptop. Registration for this computer class is requested and begins one month before the scheduled class on the first Monday of each month for KDL patrons and the second Monday for non-KDL patrons. Ballet At The Library. Sunday, October 20, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ the EGR Library. Join us as the Grand Rapids Ballet Junior Company performs sections from "Carnival of the Animals." Enjoy crafts and activities following the performance.

ABSENTEE BALLOTS ARE AVAILABLE for the November 5, 2013 City Commission election. Stop by City Hall or call 949-2110. A new State law requires absentee voters to have a photo ID or sign an affadavit of identity if picking up a ballot from the Clerk's Office, so please bring your identification with you.

Polls will be open from 7 am until 8 pm on November 5th at all the usual polling locations.

The November 5th Election will elect one City Commissioner from each of the City's three wards. More Information. Download sample ballots.

CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR PETS. The City has received complaints recently of dog owners leaving pet waste in plastic bags where it doesn't belong. Please make sure to dispose of these materials properly in trash receptacles, not by leaving them along the trail or in people's front yards.

TREE PLANTING OPPORTUNITY. Orders are currently being accepted for the City's annual tree planting program. Residents can select the type of tree to be planted in the outlawn (between the sidewalk and the street) in front of their home and pay only half the cost of the tree and planting. The City pays the remaining costs. More information.

HALLOWEEN HOOT. Calling all little ghosts, goblins, cowboys and princesses! The Halloween Hoot is Saturday, Saturday, October 26 from 1 pm to 3 pm. Kids can dress up in costume, enjoy inflatables, play games with great prizes, join the costume contest and more. Preregistration is required through the EGR Parks and Recreation Department by calling 616-949-1750 or online and the cost is: $5 per child/$20 max per family (4 children). A donation of one non-perishable food items per child for local food pantries is suggested along with your entry fee. Don't miss this spectacular event!

SNOWPLOWING CONTRACTORS. If you've already started thinking about hiring a contractor to clear your driveway this winter, please note that City ordinances require these companies to first obtain a license from the City before soliciting business or working within the City limits. A list of currently licensed contractors and regulations is available on our website.
