Street/Sidewalk Construction and Maintenance
Street Construction and Resurfacing
The city maintains 15 miles of major streets and 32 miles of residential streets. All city streets are evaluated biennially, with the assistance of technical staff and equipment from the Grand Valley Metro Council (GVMC), providing pavement condition ratings for all city streets. These ratings are utilized to select streets most needing resurfacing. The city strives to resurface two miles of city streets per year, given available funding.

Street/Sidewalk Winter Plowing Information

East Grand Rapids Sidewalks

East Grand Rapids takes pride in being a walkable community.  Everywhere you look, folks of all ages are out and about in all types of weather, shopping, jogging, headed for school, or walking the dog. At the Public Works Department, we do our best to make sure that you have a firm footing.

Every year, we inspect a selected area for worn out or unsafe squares and we replace sidewalks as necessary. We work outside the selected area wherever the most urgent problems are found. Replacement is based on a policy of established criteria based on the size of offset joints, cracking, or uneven surfaces. It takes about 10 to 12 years to complete the entire city in this continuous process. You can help by notifying us of problems that you see. Contact the Public Works Administration Office using information on the right.
