Building Permits

Projects Requiring Permits

Building permits are required for most home improvement projects, including new home construction, garages, additions, decks, roofing, siding, window replacement, and interior remodeling. The city also requires permits and inspections on other projects, including:

All work performed in the City right of way or easements must conform to the City's ROW construction standards.

Applications may be filled out and submitted to the Public Works Department Engineering Division at City Hall for review. Some permits may require a fee.

Applying for Permits

Permits can be applied for by the homeowner if the work will be completed by the homeowner. If not, a licensed contractor / builder is required to obtain the permit and complete the work. Building permit applications must be submitted at the City’s Public Works Department office located at City Hall. Following a zoning and drainage review, the permit application is forwarded to Cascade Township Inspection Services Department for processing and inspections.

The Cascade Township Building Inspection Services Department has been designated as the City of East Grand Rapids building official for all building-related permits. These also include mechanical, electrical, and plumbing permits. All building permit fees are paid to Cascade Township.
