Election Notes

Next week’s election will be a busy day at our six East Grand Rapids polling locations. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Please be sure to thank any of the 39 election inspectors you see on Election Day. These men and women work a very long day to make sure everything is done properly and that every vote counts. Without them, we couldn’t hold in-person elections.

It may be difficult to find a parking space at most of the polling locations due to the turnout, so please allow yourself plenty of time and consider walking to your polling place, if possible.

Precinct 6 voters

Don’t forget your voting location changed in 2017. You no longer vote at Lakeside Elementary – the new location is at the High School Performing Arts Center. Voters should not park in the visitor lot in front of the high school and cannot enter through the front doors of the high school. While you can enter from either the north or south PAC doors, you should park in the Bagley Parking lot to the north of the PAC. There are signs along Bagley and outside the building directing voters to the polling location.

Shake Your Mailbox Before Winter

While out in the yard this fall, if you have a mailbox in the right-of-way (out by the street), take a few minutes to check the condition of your mailbox and its post. The most common reason why a mailbox and post is damaged during the winter is not from physical contact with a plow, but the deteriorated condition of a mailbox and/or post combined with the impact of snow being thrown from plows off of the street. Fall Leaf Collection Underway

During fall leaf season, leaves may be placed curbside without being in containers. Leaves should be placed along or in the street without obstructing the traveled portion of the roadway and away from storm sewer catch basins. We ask that residents assist in keeping catch basins clear to prevent localized flooding from rain events. During fall leaf pickup, depending on the amount of leaves in each route as they fall, crews may be off schedule by a day. Please view yard waste rules and regulations for more information. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.

Water Meter Replacement Program and Cross-Connection Inspection

The City has begun a City-wide water meter replacement program with a cross-connection inspection, which will eventually replace nearly 4,000 old meters that are reaching the end of their serviceable life after having been in service for 20-25 years. The new meters are expected to have a similar service life, which will ensure accurate readings and billing. The replacement program is being funding through the utility rate fund so there will be no additional cost to you.

Required by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the cross-connection inspection ensures safe drinking water by looking for and eliminating possible contamination of the public water distribution system. The target area for this year is south of Robinson to Franklin and from Gladstone east to Plymouth. Residents in the target area will receive a notice from the City as well as a notice from HydroCorp, the contractor working on behalf of the City, in the near future.
