A NOTE FROM MAYOR FAVALE

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

Over the past couple months, we have seen COVID-19 affecting our modern world in a completely unprecedented way. Late last week, when cases were confirmed on the east side of our state, shortly followed by Kent County, this issue became all the more real to us.

Information has been cascading from every platform, and as I have tuned into press conferences and kept up with the latest information, I always come back to two things — we must take this issue seriously and we must stay calm.

If you are able, please stay home. It is a simple act that will do everyone so much good. Once this is all over, we may not know if we overreacted. However, if we underreact now, we may know the consequences all too soon. I think that’s a risk very much worth taking.

As we move forward, please remember this too, shall pass. While this is all under unfortunate circumstances, take advantage of the opportunity to stay home in your pajamas and enjoy this time with your loved ones. In a very busy world, some alone time away from the chaos of everyday life will do us good. Take this pause to hold your loved ones a little tighter and enjoy their company.

If you are able, I encourage you to support our local businesses, who will struggle in the upcoming months without your help. Remember, many of our restaurants will continue to offer take out.

As we move forward, the City will continue to follow the CDC, the State of Michigan and the Kent County Health Department’s direction. If you do not already follow the City on Facebook and Twitter, subscribe to our e-newsletter or visit our website, I encourage you to do so as we will keep you posted on any changes here at City Hall.

Lastly, I want to thank all those who are taking care of us during this time — our first responders and healthcare professionals. Their hard work, long days and incredible dedication, is getting us through this.

Stay healthy,

Katie

CITY COMMISSION MEETINGS

Due to COVID-19, the Monday, March 16 commission meeting agenda was revised to remove all public hearings and only included consent agenda approvals.

We will determine whether the Monday, March 30 meeting (previously rescheduled from April 6 due to spring break traveling) will be canceled closer to the meeting date. Please stay tuned.

Remember, you can view meetings live on our YouTube channel and find agendas and minutes at www.eastgr.org/111/Agendas-Minutes

PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY RESULTS

Curious how your precinct voted in last week’s Presidential Primary? You can view the unofficial EGR results, details and statistics on our website. Special thanks to all the election workers who spent a long day at the polls assisting the 2,792 voters who voted in person and the specialized team of workers who processed 1,365 absentee ballots in under seven hours.

SUPPORT OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES

It’s still possible to support our local businesses amidst COVID-19. MLive recently shared six ways to do so.

Many of our restaurants remain open to provide take out and some our retailers and services are operating with adjusted hours. Remember, these are the businesses that sponsor local and school events and a huge part of what makes our community so vibrant.

Please visit individual business Facebook pages and/or websites for daily offerings and modified hours or closure information.
