Help Shape Our City's Future

The East Grand Rapids Planning Commission is preparing an update to the City Master Plan, which includes a more detailed design plan for Gaslight Village. You are invited to attend several events. 

When: Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017
Where: Community Center

10:30 AM | A session targeted for merchants, business owners and operators to discuss: 

  • Emerging trends in small downtown retail and services from a market perspective
  • Parking study results 
  • Concepts for downtown development and design

3:00 - 5:00 PM | A session targeted for residents and community members to discuss:

  • Existing and future housing in and around Gaslight Village
  • Concepts for downtown development and design

7:00 PM | A work session of the Planning Commission to discuss:

  • The market perspective – what are the trends in downtown retail, uses and entertainment; Goals, concepts and priorities for the uses and design of Gaslight Village 
  • Parking study results

The Facilitators

  • Joe Nickol, AICP, LEED AP, Senior Associate, MKSK. Joe’s background in urban design, architecture, and real estate development advising informs his focus at MKSK on urban development strategies for regenerating cities, towns and neighborhoods. Joe has directed the design and implementation of public sector and private development projects from small targeted pop-up efforts to billion-dollar urban revitalization projects in North America and abroad.
  • Howard Kohn, President & CEO, The Chesapeake Group Howard is a highly experienced downtown, suburban, urban and rural planning consultant. An economist and market analyst as well, his work frequently entails defining opportunities, defining market positioning, and defining economic impacts relating to public and private activity and developments. With over 35 years of experience, Howard's analyses create economic and revenue producing benefits.

  • Brad Strader, AICP, PTP, Senior Associate, MKSK Brad was involved in the city’s previous city-wide and Gaslight Village Plans, and has been involved with the city since 1998. He manages the MKSK Michigan office and has worked with many of the downtowns throughout the state including Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, Traverse City, Midland and Birmingham. He is a frequent speaker nationally on innovations in community planning and transportation for all types of users.
