COVID-19 Response and Resources

EGR Rec Logo-4cProc No Logo half inch diameter

It’s important to stay informed on COVID-19 by the experts. The City of East Grand Rapids will follow the direction of the Kent County Health Department and the State of Michigan. We encourage everyone to educate themselves on the virus and how to protect you and your family from these non-biased and reliable resources. The KCHD provides helpful and accurate information including videos, tips and answers to FAQs, as well as helpful links to the CDC and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The MDHHS has also set up a hotline for citizens with questions at 888-535-6136 (8 am to 5 pm daily).

May 7, 2020. Governor Whitmer Continues Suspension of Activities Not Necessary to Sustain or Protect Life.  Stay Home. Stay Safe.

Executive Order 2020-77; Effective 5/7/2020 through 5/28/2020. Read full text here.

In accordance with Governor Whitmer’s extended“Stay Home. Stay Safe” Executive Order issued 5/7/20, we want to make you aware of the following:

  • The Public Safety Department and Public works Department are still at full staffing and taking precautions as directed by their job duties. As always, dial 9-1-1 if you have a police, fire or medical emergency, or if you need immediate assistance due to a water or sewer emergency. Call 949-7010 for non-emergency requests.
  • All other offices are either closed or being staffed with the minimum of staff necessary to conduct crucial operations. In some cases, staff are working from home or reporting only periodically to maintain operations. Please contact us at 949.2110 and leave a message for staff if you reach our voicemail. Someone will return your call as staffing levels allow.
  • We are no longer taking appointments for individual assistance for paperwork or permits. All city offices and facilities are closed to the public.
  • We encourage residents to use our 24/7 dropbox at our main entrance and to use online systems and payments where possible. Most city payments can be made online at
  • City and School playgrounds are closed until further notice according to guidance from the Kent County Health Department.
  • The City will not issue permits for block parties until medium to large gatherings are permitted by state guidelines.
  • East Grand Rapids parks and outdoor athletic facilities remain open at this time; however, citizens must adhere to the Governor’s Executive Orders as well as maintain social distancing of six feet or more and other guidance to help stop the spread of COVID-19. If we see gatherings and contact sports at athletic fields, we may be forced to close all public spaces.  Please talk with your middle school and high school students about the need to maintain proper distance and to not gather in groups. You can also set a good example for them by modeling all of these practices yourselves.
  • Follow us on Facebook for up-to-date info:
  • We requesting that our citizens follow the governors executive order. Violating the order is a misdemeanor offense. Anyone can report violations to the Michigan Attorney General Consumer Complaint Hotline at (877) 765-8388 or online at
  • The Kent County Sheriff’s Office handles our dispatching operations. They request that you do not call 9-1-1 to report potential violations so that dispatchers can focus on emergency situations. Please review the information available online at and,9753,7-406-98178_98737---,00.html before calling in a potential violation to 632-6357 (non-emergency number).

Thank you for your patience as we allow staff to stay home with their families to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
