The proper disposal of unused and expired prescription medications is critical to the health and safety of our community and our environment. That’s why the East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department again plans to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 24.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents and community members are encouraged to drop off unused and expired medications at the EGR Public Safety lobby at 770 Lakeside Drive SE.
EGR’s Public Safety Department, in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, is permitted to collect a wide variety of prescription medications, including opioids. Other drop-off locations restrict the types of medications they can collect and dispose.
“Residents can help keep our community safe by turning in any unused prescription medications in a safe and anonymous manner,” said Dave VanHouten, EGR Public Safety clerk who oversees the department’s medication collection program. “Collecting these medications helps us ensure they are not stolen from homes or enter our environment. It also decreases the potential for accidental misuse or abuse.
“While we offer this service year-round, the annual fall and spring take back days serve as great reminders for the community as we transition into new seasons.”
EGR’s take back days typically yield nearly 200 pounds of medications.
