East Grand Rapids, Michigan, February 22, 2023 – The East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department has received reaccreditation from the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.
To achieve MLEAC reaccreditation, a police agency must demonstrate compliance with 105 law enforcement standards and successfully undergo an onsite audit. As part of the reaccreditation process, an MLEAC assessment team comprised of law enforcement practitioners from across the state thoroughly inspects aspects of an agency’s policies, procedures, management, operations and support services through a department tour, personnel interviews, ride-alongs and file reviews. The assessors also collect community feedback on the department’s ability to comply with MLEAC standards.
“MLEAC reaccreditation demonstrates East Grand Rapids Public Safety is voluntarily putting in the extra work to ensure our policies and operations are following best practices,” Chief Mark Herald said. “The department strives to serve our community with the best law enforcement standards to ensure safety, transparency and accountability.”
East Grand Rapids Public Safety is one of 58 MLEAC-accredited departments in the state of Michigan, which has 578 law enforcement agencies.
The East Grand Rapids City Commission will recognize the department’s MLEAC reaccreditation at its March 6 meeting.
“I am delighted to see Public Safety go the extra mile in actively seeking MLEAC reaccreditation,” East Grand Rapids Mayor Katie Favale said. “Public Safety has a long tradition of being a leader in law enforcement best practices and building positive relationships with residents, and this further demonstrates their commitment to both.”
MLEAC accreditation is valid for three years, during which time the agency must submit annual reports demonstrating its continued compliance with the organization’s standards. The East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department first received MLEAC accreditation in 2020.
MLEAC is the assessment division of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police. For the complete list of MLEAC standards, visit michiganpolicechiefs.org.
